The great Ferdowsi, also known as Hakim Abu'l-Qasim Ferdowsi Tusi or Firdausi (940-1020 AD), is one of the most significant Iranian poets. In a time in which the use of the Arabic language was spreading across the Arabic empire, Ferdowsi chose to write poems and tales in Iranian language, thereby contributing to preserving the Persian language. His most famous work, the Shahnameh, tells the legendary history of the pre-Islamic Iranian kings from Keyumars to Yazdegerd III. Ferdowsi is seen as the father of the modern Persian language by many Iranians. The mausoleum is surrounded by a park, and lies in Tus about 20km north of Mashhad. In and arośnd the mausoleum are bas-reliefs with scenes from tales of Ferdowsi.
