The Naqshejahan square (also known as Naqsh-e Jahan or Imam square) lies in the centre of Isfahan and is 160 meters wide and 508 meters long for a total area of 90000 m2. It is the second largest square in the world. The square was built during the reign of Shah Abbas I by the most famous architect of the time, Ali Akbar Isfahani. The square is surrounded by Safavid era buildings: the Shah Mosque on its southern side, the Ali Qapu Palace on its western side and the Sheikh Lotf Allah Mosque on its eastern side. The Naqshejahan square has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979.
