The Umaid Bhawan Palace was built in 1929 on Chittar hill near Jodhpur, as a famine relief exercise when the monsoon failed for the third year running. The palace is built out of sandstone and marble. Nowadays a part of it is an expensive hotel; the other part is open to the public.
