The North Sea coast in Lower Saxony consists mostly of wetlands, marshes and sand dunes. The Wadden Sea national park, an intertidal zone extending along the coast, rich in biological diversity was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2009. The North Sea coast in Lower Saxony attracts a large number of tourists during the summer months.
